The Ultimate Guide to Lash Extension Maintenance: How to Make Them Last Weeks

"Your glue is terrible, my lashes are gone in three days!"
That was how angry and frustrated Lucia was when she walked through the doors of our Studio on a Thursday morning. She had a beautiful, full Russian Volume set done on Monday, and now she had obvious bald spots on both eyes.
I sat her down, turned on the magnifying lamp, and saw the disaster up close. The few extensions she had left were clumped together by a thick, shiny, greasy layer. They looked heavy and sad.
I asked her: "Lucia, tell me exactly how you are taking your makeup off at night." She opened her purse and proudly pulled out a biphasic makeup remover (those bottles that have a layer of water on the bottom and a layer of oil floating on top that you have to shake).
Bingo. We found the culprit.
"Lucia, oil is the absolute kryptonite of lash adhesive. You haven't lost your lashes naturally; you have literally melted the glue." She started crying, but this time out of pure frustration. No one had ever sat down to explain this to her before.
Lash extension maintenance is full of absurd, dangerous myths circulating on the internet. If you are tired of spending money on beautiful lashes only to watch them fall out in the sink a week later, this guide is for you.
I am going to explain to you, from zero and without using complicated scientific words, exactly how your lashes work, how the glue behaves, and what you must do every day to ensure your investment lasts for weeks, not days.
Starting from Scratch: How Do Your Natural Lashes Work?
Before we can understand why extensions fall out, we need to understand your own body.
A lot of women panic when they see an extension fall out with their natural lash attached to it. They think: "Oh my god, the extensions are pulling my real lashes out, I'm going to go bald!"
Let me reassure you: losing natural lashes every day is completely normal and healthy.
Just like the hair on your head, your eyelashes have a life cycle. Imagine your lashes in three different phases, like a family:
- The Baby Lashes (Anagen Phase): These are brand new, tiny lashes just sprouting from your eyelid. They are actively growing. We never put heavy extensions on baby lashes because they are too weak to hold the weight.
- The Teenager Lashes (Catagen Phase): These have stopped growing but are firmly rooted. They are the perfect, strong foundation for us to apply an extension.
- The Adult Lashes (Telogen Phase): These are the oldest lashes. They are just resting there, waiting to fall out naturally to make room for a new baby lash.
Every single day, you naturally shed between 2 to 5 adult lashes from each eye. You just never noticed it before because your natural lashes are thin and light. But when that natural adult lash falls out with a thick, dark, beautiful extension attached to it, you suddenly notice it on your cheek or pillow.
If an extension falls out with a natural lash attached (and it doesn't hurt), congratulate yourself. Your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. If an extension falls out without the natural lash, that means the glue failed. And that's what we are going to fix today.
The Secret of the Glue: What Exactly Is Holding Your Lashes?
To keep the extension attached to your natural hair, we use professional, medical-grade adhesive. The main ingredient in this adhesive is something called cyanoacrylate.
You don't need to memorize that word, but you do need to know how it behaves.
Imagine this glue is like wet cement. When we apply the lash, the cement is wet. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, that cement needs to dry, harden, and "cure" completely.
But this cement has a very specific weakness: oil and grease. If oil touches the cement, it softens it. It turns the hard cement back into a sticky, slippery mess, causing the extension to just slide right off your natural hair.
Now that you know how your natural hair works and how the glue behaves, let's dive into the Golden Rules of maintenance.
The Golden Rules of Aftercare
Rule #1: The First 48 Hours are Critical
Because our "cement" takes up to 48 hours to completely harden inside and out, you have to be very careful during this initial window.
- Avoid steam and intense heat: No saunas, no hot yoga, and no opening the oven door and letting the blast of hot steam hit your face. Steam can re-melt the glue before it fully sets.
- Sleep carefully: The glue is still somewhat flexible. If you smash your face into a pillow on the first night, you will wake up with your lashes bent in a weird direction, and they will stay stuck that way.
Rule #2: The Giant Myth: "Water is Your Enemy"
There is a terrifying myth in the beauty industry that says "if you get your lashes wet, they will fall out faster." This is 100% false.
In fact, water actually helps the adhesive cure and harden! Once your initial 48 hours are up, you MUST get your lashes wet.
Think about it: your eyelids are skin. Skin produces natural oils (sebum) every single day. You also sweat, you wear makeup, and there is dust in the air. If you don't wash your lashes, all of that natural oil, dead skin, and dirt will accumulate right at the root of your eyelashes.
What happens then?
- The accumulated oil will melt the glue, causing the extensions to fall off (just like Lucia's did).
- The dirt will create a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to a nasty eye infection called blepharitis, which causes redness, itching, and eventually makes all your natural lashes fall out.
Washing your extensions is mandatory, not optional.
Rule #3: Oil is Public Enemy Number One
As we learned from Lucia's disaster, oil destroys the adhesive. You must completely eliminate any oil-based products from your eye area.
- Throw away biphasic makeup removers.
- Stop using heavy, greasy eye creams at night (or apply them very carefully far beneath the eye, nowhere near the lashes).
- Avoid facial oils or heavy serums around the brow and eye area.
What should you use instead? Oil-free micellar water for your face, and a specific product for the lashes which we will discuss next.
How to Wash Your Lashes Properly (The Step-by-Step Routine)
You cannot just rub a bar of soap on your eyes. You need a specific product called Lash Shampoo. This is a gentle, oil-free foaming cleanser designed specifically to remove dirt without harming the glue.
Here is the exact routine you should do every single night:
- Dispense the foam: Pump a small amount of Lash Shampoo onto clean fingers or, ideally, onto the soft, fluffy cleansing brush we provide at the Studio.
- Apply gently: Close your eyes and gently dab the foam onto your lashes.
- The sweeping motion: Do not rub side to side! That will tangle the extensions. Instead, use the brush to gently sweep downwards, from the eyelid down to the tips of the lashes.
- Rinse thoroughly: Splash your eyes with plenty of lukewarm water until all the foam is gone.
- Dry properly: Gently pat them dry with a lint-free towel or a piece of paper towel. Never use cotton pads or cotton balls, because the tiny cotton fibers will get hooked onto the base of the extensions and rip them out.
The Silent Enemies: Sleeping and Touching
Sometimes, clients follow all the washing rules perfectly but still lose lashes on one specific eye. Why?
1. The "Face-Plant" Sleeper If you always lose the lashes on your right eye, I can guarantee you sleep on your right side or stomach, burying that side of your face into the pillow. Mechanical friction (rubbing against the fabric for 8 hours) will literally tear the extensions off. The Solution: Try to sleep on your back. If that's impossible, invest in a silk or satin pillowcase. The slippery fabric of silk creates almost zero friction, allowing your lashes to glide over the pillow instead of getting snagged.
2. The Anxious Picker If you sit at your desk while working and nervously touch, pull, or play with your lashes, you are transferring the natural oils from your fingers directly onto the glue. You are also adding unnecessary physical stress to the hair follicle. Keep your hands off your face!
Makeup Do's and Don'ts
The beauty of lash extensions is that you don't need eye makeup anymore. But if you want to wear it for a special event, follow these rules:
- NO MASCARA: Never apply mascara over volume extensions. It will clump the beautiful, fluffy fans together, and it is impossible to wash off completely without ripping the lashes out. If you absolutely must wear mascara on your bottom natural lashes, use a water-based, non-waterproof one.
- Eyeliner Warning: Gel eyeliners, pencil liners, and waterproof liquid liners often contain waxes and oils. If you draw a line right over the roots of your extensions, you are painting oil directly onto the glue. If you must use eyeliner, use an oil-free liquid liner or simply use black eyeshadow applied with an angled brush.
Brushing: The Morning Ritual
After getting out of the shower or waking up from sleep, it's normal for your extensions to look a little messy or crossed.
Do not try to separate them with your fingers!
Instead, use the clean mascara wand (spoolie brush) that we gift you at your first AC Studio appointment. Wait until the lashes are completely dry. Then, place the brush on top of the lashes and gently twirl it downwards. Never brush them aggressively from the root up while they are wet, as they are heavier and more vulnerable to being pulled out.
When to Book a Refill (And Why Waiting Too Long is a Mistake)
Your natural lashes are constantly growing and shedding. After about 3 to 4 weeks, two things have happened:
- Many of your adult lashes have naturally fallen out, taking the extension with them, leaving gaps.
- The baby lashes have grown into teenagers, meaning the extension that was glued close to the eyelid is now sitting far out on the tip of the lash. This makes the lash top-heavy, which can twist and damage the natural root.
At a refill appointment, we don't just glue new lashes into the empty gaps. We actively search for those overgrown extensions, safely remove them, and apply fresh ones closer to the base.
If you wait 5 or 6 weeks, there won't be enough extensions left, and we will have to charge you for a completely new full set. To protect your natural lash health and your wallet, book your refills strictly between 2.5 to 3.5 weeks.
The AC Studio Difference
Let's go back to Lucia. We had to completely safely remove the oily disaster she had created, do a deep lash bath, and apply a fresh, brand new set of Russian Volume lashes.
This time, she took home our AC Studio Cleansing Kit and followed these exact instructions. Three and a half weeks later, she returned for her scheduled fill appointment with 60% of her extensions still perfectly intact, fluffy, and clean.
At Adriana Costa Studio, we believe our job doesn't end when you walk out the door. We don't just apply lashes; we teach you exactly how to live with them so your gaze looks flawless, healthy, and stunning from day 1 to day 25.
If you are in Barcelona or near Avenida Meridiana and you are tired of throwing money away on lashes that don't last, or studios that don't educate you on aftercare, it's time to experience the quality, care, and retention we offer.
